When we look at our faces in the mirror every day, we don't feel that we are aging because it looks the same today as it did yesterday, but when we compare it to a photo taken five years ago, it is obvious. Without even realizing it, our skin is getting duller, wrinkles are increasing, our faces are sagging, our hair is getting thinner, and our aging is steadily progressing.
Buddhism teaches that all things are impermanent. This means that nothing lasts forever and everything will inevitably be turned upside down. This applies not only to our body but also to absolutely everything in existence. There is not even a single thing that will not betray (or leave) us.
All things do not last, and they will be lost and betray us eventually, so no matter what we do, we can never truly be at peace inside. Therefore, Master Shinran taught that if we want to be truly happy, we must have the right kind of faith that will never betray us in the end.
So, what is "true faith"? This faith is not about believing in something with one's own mind.
The word "faith" can be interpreted as "true mind". The true mind is not the deluded mind with which we human beings believe in things. It’s the mind of Buddha. And to receive the mind of Buddha is to obtain true faith. We receive the mind of Buddha in this life, while we are alive, as opposed to after death. The reason why you are listening to Buddhism now is to receive the mind of Buddha. True faith is not something you do, but something you receive. That's the right kind of faith, because it's not a deluded mind but a true mind. Since we receive this faith, it’s called ‘other-power faith'.
